Stretch Marks Q & A

What are stretch marks?

A stretch mark is actually a scar that develops when your skin stretches or contracts quickly and damages the collagen and elastin fibers. As your skin heals from the sudden change, the ruptured collagen and elastin fibers appear as red, brown, or purple twisted lines. They may also be raised or itchy.

Over time, your stretch marks fade and recede to thinner, flatter, pale lines on your skin. They may even eventually cause mild depressions on your skin. You can develop stretch marks almost anywhere on your body, but they’re most often found on the:

  • Abdomen
  • Back
  • Thighs
  • Buttocks

What causes stretch marks?

In most cases, stretch marks occur following a period of rapid weight gain or loss. Your skin has to stretch and contract quickly to keep up, which damages the elastin and collagen fibers. Many people develop stretch marks following:

  • A growth spurt
  • Pregnancy
  • Weight training and rapid muscle growth

Other causes of stretch marks include the extended use of topical corticosteroids which can weaken and thin your skin. You may also be more prone to stretch marks if you have health conditions like Cushing’s disease or Marfan syndrome.

How are stretch marks treated?

At Luminous Vein Care and Aesthetics, Dr. Hindi and his team treat stretch marks with a variety of procedures including microneedling and laser skin rejuvenation treatments.

Microneedling stimulates collagen production in your skin which can plump depressed stretch marks and reduce their appearance. The treatment creates hundreds of tiny puncture wounds in your skin, which trigger your body’s natural healing response. As your body floods your skin with nutrients and growth factors, it repairs your skin and boosts new cell growth.

Dr. Hindi and his team may also recommend a laser treatment to reduce your stretch marks. At Luminous Vein Care and Aesthetics, you can have state-of-the-art laser treatments with either the Cynosure® Elite MPX® or RevLite SI® equipment. The lasers both heat your skin to stimulate collagen production deep within it to plump your skin and reduce stretch marks.
