Acne Scarring Q & A

How does acne scar my skin?

Acne develops when a pore is clogged with sebum, dead skin cells, and bacteria. The bacteria cause inflammation which not only leads to raised, red pimples but also damages your skin tissue.

When a pore is swollen, it can rupture to release its contents. If this break occurs near the surface of your skin, the break in your skin is usually minor and heals quickly. However, if the rupture occurs deeper in your skin, the infected material can damage the surrounding healthy skin tissue.

The temptation to pick at your acne is strong, but your skin will thank you for leaving it alone. Not only does touching your skin spread the offending bacteria around causing more acne, but you can further damage your skin and cause more severe scarring.

How is acne scarring treated?

At Luminous Vein Care and Aesthetics, Dr. Hindi and his team offer a variety of treatments to reduce the appearance of acne scarring including laser skin rejuvenation and microneedling.

Dr. Hindi and his team use both the Cynosure® Elite MPX® and RevLite SI® equipment to treat acne scarring. The lasers use different wavelengths of energy, but both stimulate collagen production deep within your skin to plump your skin and raise depressed acne scars. The lasers also cause a deep exfoliation of your skin which helps your body remove discolored and rough scars.

Microneedling creates hundreds of tiny puncture wounds in your skin, which trigger your body’s natural healing response. As your body floods your skin with nutrients and growth factors, it boosts your collagen production which leaves you with smoother, healthier-looking skin.

How should I take care of my skin while I’m having treatment for acne scarring?

Dr. Hindi gives you customized aftercare instructions to take care of your skin in between your appointments. You may need several sessions to achieve your optimal results.

In general, you should take care to avoid the sun and wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen every day. Laser treatments and microneedling can increase your skin’s photosensitivity, which means that the sun could cause discoloration or other unwanted side effects.
